Wieliczka Salt Mine — Poland

There is a whole city under the town of Wieliczka, just outside Kraków. Salt has been mined here since the 13th century, and over 700 years the miners carved out more than 287 kilometres of tunnels, chambers and underground lakes reaching down to 327 metres.

Everything on the tourist route — 135 metres below ground — is made from salt. Walls, altars, sculptures, even the chandeliers.

The heart of it is the Chapel of St. Kinga. Carved by hand over 70 years by the miners themselves, it's vast and impossibly detailed for something made in near-darkness, and strangely silent.
